As a teenager I loved to skateboard, so when I saw a video of someone flying above the water on what looked like a hoverboard, I had to get one.

 

Flying over water seems impossible, but the tiny underwater wing flies through the water and lifted me into the air. And, with a precise motion, kept me going for as long as I could endure it. I learned to jump off my dock, pump out to a passing boat, and surf its wake for a long as I could. I moved between the wakes creating my own endless surf wave. I was limited only by my ability to launch it, fly it, and surf it. My endurance and the technology limited me to only 1-2 minutes of flight between rests.

 

I wanted to fly longer and farther. My friend and neighbor, Justin spent hundreds of hours pursuing this dream. We modified foils and tested every one we could get our hands on. Nearly every major brand sent us their equipment for testing and reviews. We worked with anyone interested in pushing the frontiers. We dug into the physics, and built contraptions to make launching easier, including a bungee that worked like a slingshot and a device that attaches to your dock to hold the board as you jumped onto it.

 

We started a YouTube channel. We reviewed products. I've now flown 400+ foils. With enough experience and some strong opinions, I formed strong opinions about my favorite foil in each discipline.

The community began forming around this sport. It reminded me of the early days of skateboarding ... cheering one another on, improving together, helping beginners learn, and pushing one another to new levels. And, like skateboarding, we were getting into some "trouble" stealing boat wakes, jumping off anything we can find along the shore, and exploring lakes. It’s amazing how far this sport has come, and yet, we’re still at the beginning. 

 

We started the 1 min challenge. Anyone who dock starts and pumps for a minute earns a free Power Pumper hat and membership in the Club. Every video puts a smile on my face, and we've now sent more than 600 hats around the world.

 

There’s something addictive about being outside, with the sun in your eyes and the water on your skin. This was my hobby. It became my passion and spawned my mid-life awakening. Its been the best thing for my mental and physical health. And now, in my forties, I've never felt better.

 

Today, we're inspired by the dream of making this sport more accessible. It's hard to learn, it's expensive, and there are so many options and brands to choose from.
